This collaboration of two performers, one pianist and one percussion player, is not confined simply to the level of an aural texture that is created by two individual instruments but seeks to go to the core of an invention, to its very creation of a new common sonic structure. The title reflects that I, therefore, play with a varying degree of prominence that is given sometimes to the piano and at other times to percussion. Though much of the composition is based on collectively employed musical textures, it does leave room for individuality in performance. Consequently, the work makes entirely virtuosic demands in terms of range, articulation, and technical difficulties. - Friedrich Heinrich Kern
